Coins have not changed much throughout antiquity. Yes, they are made of different and more durable materials today, but they are still engraved with representations of their civilization, be it the profile of George Washington, or the profile of Emperor Nero, or the profile of a lion, the symbol of ancient Babylon. . Ancient Coins through the Bible traces the passage of time from Abraham to the Crusaders, chronicling the history of various places mentioned in the Bible and featuring photos of ancient coins minted in those cities. Although we cannot see these ancient civilizations or their way of life, these tangible bits of the past speak volumes about them. As you see these fragments of history, imagine you are traveling to Canaan with Abraham and to Spain with Paul. Experience Bible stories visually through the depicted coins, rather than just reading them, and better understand the lessons taught from God's Word.

Coins were an integral part of classical studies in ancient times. However, many scholars have commented that coins were not properly integrated into the study of the New Testament. This book offers Bible students an interdisciplinary approach to the study of numismatics. Wenkel argues that 1st-century coins were cultural texts with communicative power. It sets out a simple but comprehensive hermeneutics that defines coins as cultural texts and explains how they can be interpreted today. After coins were understood as cultural texts, Wenkel explains how these texts can be approached from three perspectives. First, the coin-facing world is defined as the audience that originally read and responded to coins as cultural texts. The entire Roman Empire used coins for payment. Second, the world of currency refers to the currency itself - the combination of inscriptions and images. This combination of inscription and image was used ubiquitously as a means of propaganda. Third, the world behind currency refers to the world of power and production behind coins. This third perspective examines the concept of coin authorship as cultural texts.

The Dictionary of the Bible and Ancient Media is a convenient and reliable reference work that introduces specific terms and concepts useful for studying the Bible and related literature in ancient communication culture. Since the early 1980s, biblical scholars have begun exploring the potential of interdisciplinary theories on oral tradition, oral performance, personal and collective memory, ancient literacy and writing, visual culture, and ritual. Over time, these theories were combined with reflections on critical and exegetical problems in the study of the Bible, the history of Israel, Christian origins, and the rabbis. The Dictionary of the Bible and Ancient Media responds to the rapidly expanding field by providing a reference resource that offers clear definitions and in-depth discussions of relevant terms and concepts and the relationships between them. The volume begins with an overview of "ancient media studies" and a brief research history to orient the reader to the field and broader research context of the book, with individual entries on terms and themes common to biblical studies in ancient media culture. Each entry defines the term/concept under consideration and provides a more sustained discussion of the topic, with particular emphasis on its relevance to the study of the Bible and related literature.
